Released by Warp in 2013, R Plus Seven marks Daniel Lopatin's (Oneohtrix Point Never) near-total abandonment of the analog synth aesthetic that had defined his earlier work, in favor of a sonic vocabulary built from MIDI presets, stock library samples, and music notation software. It's a record that sounds deliberately "fake" in the most literal sense: digital choirs that make no effort to disguise their synthetic origin, General MIDI horns, abrupt transitions that deny any illusion of live performance. The tracks' structure rejects the organic development typical of ambient or concert electronic music: "Boring Angel" and "Americans" proceed through juxtaposed blocks, often without smooth transition, as if the listener were scrolling between simultaneously open software windows rather than following a continuous melodic line. "Zebra" alternates near-baroque arpeggios with sudden pockets of silence; "Problem Areas" builds its longer runtime on a layered accumulation that never resolves into a conventional climax. This compositional choice isn't a technical affectation for its own sake: Lopatin works explicitly with software texture as expressive material, treating the interface itself — a sequencer's "factory" sound, the aesthetic of never-customized presets — as a cultural archive in its own right, with its own history and its own unintended emotional charge. This is music that precisely inhabits the in-between space where code generates an affect nobody programmed. This approach connects directly to Nick Bostrom's hypothesis about reality's computational substrate — not so much through explicit thematic content as through the way the record renders audible the grain of its own generative process, the "background noise" of computation beneath the sonic surface. It's not a link the record declares, but it's hard to listen to the programmatic artificiality of these tracks without thinking of a system that exposes, rather than hides, the architecture producing it. More than ten years on, R Plus Seven remains a touchstone for an entire generation of producers interested in a non-nostalgic digital aesthetic, one that treats the artificial not as its own autonomous expressive territory.
