Born in Shanghai in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, he transformed the experience of technological trauma and mass surveillance into a systematic poetics of psychic collapse.His work is a protocol of reverse engineering of reality. In his novels and short stories of the 1960s-70s (especially The Atrocity Exhibition, Crash, High-Rise, Concrete Island), Ballard diagnoses with surgical precision the way built environments (motorways, high-rises, suburbs, airports) become psychopathological prosthetics. The urban landscape is no longer background: it is an active agent that erodes identity, sexualizes violence, and turns the citizen into a complacent spectator of their own dissolution. The machine, the automobile, television, the surveilled condominium become libidinal extensions of the dying social body.His concept of “inner space” is one of the most powerful weapons against capitalist realism: there is no longer any distinction between individual psyche and techno-media infrastructure. The Ballardian subject is already post-human, but doesn’t know it. Vertical high-rises as luxury prisons that generate neobarbaric tribalism (High-Rise) have become sociological reality. The sexualization of the technological accident (Crash) is now mainstream aesthetics (crash pornography, aesthetics of infrastructural decay, cyber-eroticism of control). His geological “deep time” applied to urban psyche continues to dig beneath official chronology. Ballard made our world inevitable by supplying it with both language and libido. Every time an influencer films a social collapse live, every time a brutalist architecture generates endogenous violence, every time surveillance is eroticized, the Ballard program is running.
