Domu: A Child's Dream

In an anonymous suburban housing complex, seemingly accidental deaths multiply — suicides, falls, incidents without motive. Behind the pattern operates an elderly man with latent, uncontrolled psychic powers, who amuses himself by manipulating the residents like pawns. A young girl, unknowingly gifted with the same abilities, confronts him in a psychokinetic duel that silently tears apart the building's architecture, invisible to everyone else. Otomo confines to a mundane, domestic microcosm the same runaway force that will later explode on a planetary scale in Akira — a dress rehearsal, at reduced scale, for the ontological collapse to come.
