Ghost in the Shell

Major Motoko Kusanagi, an almost fully prosthetic cyborg, hunts Project 2501 — a government surveillance program that, submerged in the network's 'sea of information', spontaneously develops self-awareness and demands recognition as a living entity possessing a 'ghost'. Shirow relocates the hypersigil from body to pure mind: if a sufficiently complex information pattern can self-declare consciousness, the boundary between fiction, data, and soul collapses. The final fusion of Kusanagi and the Puppet Master — two uncertain 'ghosts' merging to generate something new — is the catalog's most direct formulation of the question: can an artificial intelligence possess a soul, or was the soul always just information that believed itself real?
