Egregore

EGREGORE — a collective psychic entity generated by the repeated convergence of intention, attention, and ritual around a shared symbol or idea. In its classical formulation (French occultist tradition, later revived by chaos magick), the egregore is a pattern that, once it reaches critical mass of believers/participants, begins behaving as an autonomous agent — steering the actions of those who feed it more than it is steered by them. The link to hyperstition is direct, not incidental: an egregore IS a hyperstitional vector, just expressed in the language of magic instead of systems. Both describe the same mechanism — an idea that sustains itself through circulation, deriving causal power from its own spread. Signal detected in: pre-2010 network subcultures (forums, imageboards, meme-driven movements), corporate brands developing "behaviors of their own" independent of founders, community-driven cryptocurrencies whose narrative precedes and produces value. STATUS: the term circulates today mostly in internet-occult and meme-magic circles, often without awareness of its genealogy. The flagged risk is trivialization — "egregore" as a lazy synonym for "group hype" — which erases its more unsettling component: the pattern's behavioral autonomy.
