Official Review

Four years after the crushing impact of Most Normal, Dublin’s Gilla Band return with Pugnello (2026), solidifying their status as masters of contemporary rock deformation. While their earlier records built impenetrable walls of white noise and hyper-processed guitars, Pugnello pushes their sonic language into a new phase of surgical, almost manic precision, elevating techno-driven rhythms and drum machine aesthetics to the very core of the project. The architectural backbone of tracks like Jacobsons and Alogia functions like a high-voltage industrial machine. Alan Duggan Borges' guitar and Daniel Fox's bass discard conventional melodic hooks in favor of synthetic textures, digital feedback, and relentless kick-snare patterns. Over this unforgiving framework, vocalist Dara Kiely delivers his most intimate and piercing performance to date, navigating paternal loss, a schizophrenia diagnosis, and fragmented childhood memories through a mix of deadpan delivery, surreal non-sequiturs, and sharp, dark humor. Rather than relying solely on brute noise-rock force, the album deconstructs its own sonic mechanics. The hypnotic drive of Placeholder and the frantic energy of Giraffe demonstrate a band processing analog instrumentation through the logic of digital sampling and loop-based editing. Pugnello translates internal psychological fracture into a disorienting, mechanical dance, balancing raw human grief with uncompromising structural control. Within the framework of the site, Pugnello aligns directly with Dossier 11 (Industrial/Post-Industrial Scene), Dossier 1 (CCRU / Sonic fiction), and Dossier 8 (J.G. Ballard). The Irish quartet's output acts as a sounding board for psychic fragmentation and technological alienation, stripping traditional rock setup of its humanity and converting personal neuroses into rhythmic algorithms and systemic noise. Pugnello stands as another major benchmark for experimental heavy music in the 2020s. Proving that rock music can still yield radical innovation without collapsing into retro revivalism, Gilla Band have crafted a relentless, cathartic record that transforms personal trauma and psychosis into pure kinetic propulsion.
