NOISE — in Shannon's information theory, noise is what degrades a signal during transmission: unwanted entropy opposing the message. It's a negative definition — noise exists only in relation to a signal that wants to be pure, and eliminating it is the goal of any well-designed communication system. Jacques Attali, in "Noise: The Political Economy of Music" (1977), reverses this hierarchy: noise is political precondition. Every new musical order — and for Attali music always anticipates the economic structure to come — is born as unlistenable noise to the ear of the previous system, before being coded, domesticated, made into "music." Noise is the future's signal, perceived as disturbance by the present. The industrial scene (Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and downstream gabber, noise, breakcore) takes this inversion literally: it treats noise as primary material to compose with, often deliberately at the edge of physical pain threshold. Not "music made with noises" — noise refusing to become music by the existing rules. The hyperstitional link is nearly tautological: if every new order is born as noise relative to the old one, then today's noise is by definition the signal the present doesn't yet have the tools to decode — it doesn't describe the future, it literally precedes it, awaiting something to build the code that can read it. Signal detected in: harsh noise and power electronics as standalone genres, Afrofuturist sonic theory (the "alien" as a figure producing a signal the present cannot yet receive), any "premature" technology dismissed as unusable before finding its own language. STATUS: a stable concept, widely metabolized in both systems theory and music criticism — unlike other entries in this lexicon, "noise" needs no defending against trivialization: it stays operative in both registers without losing charge.
