The connection to hyperstition here is almost textbook: vaporwave reconstructs a commercial past—that of pre-2008 crash capitalism, educational CD-ROM 3D graphics, and optimistic corporate logos—that no one experienced in quite that way, rendering it nostalgic retroactively. It is the same principle that The Caretaker applies in a more experimental vein, yet produced here collectively and anonymously on the internet, often by creators who knew nothing of the term "hauntology" or Mark Fisher's theories when they first began uploading tracks online. The fiction of a golden age of consumerism becomes real through the affect it generates, regardless of whether that era ever existed in that exact form. Floral Shoppe is now considered the album that gave vaporwave its first recognizable visual aesthetic—the cover featuring a classical bust set against a magenta backdrop and grid pattern would become a template for thousands of subsequent releases—and the catalyst from which the genre expanded far beyond music, influencing advertising, fashion, and game design a decade after forging its identity through a critique of those very same commodities.
